JANE BARR GIBSON
Born of Scottish parents in Tasmania, I moved to Kirkcudbright
when I was nearly five years old.. After Kirkcudbright Academy I did teacher training in art & geography
before deciding to do art fulltime. Firstly a foundation year at Cumbria College of Art & Design, then on to a degree course at Norwich School of Art which was the only venue in the country to do wildlife illustration.
On completion I moved on to study Fashion & Textiles which incorporated my love for illustration. After working as an illustrator and designer
for some time in Norwich, I decided to returned to Kirkcudbright and
take up painting as a full time occupation.
In the intervening period of 20 years, I have developed
my work using a variety of mediums depending on subject matter, and in a
variety of styles to suit the preferences expressed by my customers. I
particularly enjoy creating images in soft pastel, and landscapes in oil
and watercolour.
I was elected artist in residence to the Dorothy L. Sayers Society in 1984, painting the Coat of Arms of Harriet Vane and Lord Peter Wimsey in the form of pendants, brooches and paperweights, which are sent all over the world to members.
Following successful exhibitions of my Miniature paintings, I was
elected member of both the Royal Society of Miniature Painters, Sculptors and Gravers (R.M.S.) and the Hilliard Society of Miniaturists
(H.S.)
In addition to my own work, I enjoy the challenge of
commissions; which can include most subjects, for example landscapes,
still life, and portraiture of children and animals in Miniature or in
larger format..
I am passionate about painting.... .I paint to live, and live to paint !!!
